Influence of Semen Collector on Semen Characteristics of Murrah Buffalo and Crossbred Bulls

Abstract: | A total of 156 ejaculates each from 8 Murrah buffalo and 8 Crossbred (Karan Fries) bulls were collected during one year period at Artificial Breeding Research Centre, NDRI, Karnal, India and analysed using least squares analysis to quantify the effect of collector on various semen quality parameters. The overall least squares mean values of Murrah buffalo and Crossbred bulls for ejaculate volume (ml), mass activity, Initial motility (%), sperm concentration (10 6 /ml), total sperm output (10 6 ), non-eosinop… Show more

“…The minimum and maximum ejaculate volumes of buffalo bulls observed in the study were 0.6 and 9.0 ml, respectively. Several reports have shown that semen ejaculate volume of Murrah buffalo bulls ranged between 2.78 and 5.0 ml (Bhakat, Mohanty, Raina, Gupta, & Khan, 2011; Bhakat et al., 2015; Henry et al., 2017). In this study, aggressiveness, penile erection and reaction time were not correlated with semen volume.…”

“…Libido and mating ability are essential parameters needed for selection of breeding males of all domestic species, including buffalo (Anzar, Ahmad, Nazir, Ahmad, & Shah, 1993; Chenoweth, 1981). Sexual behaviour of breeding bulls during natural mating as well as during semen collection (Purohit, Singh, Vyas, & Yadav, 1998; Samo, Brohi, Kaka, Qureshi, & Memon, 2005; Singh et al., 2015) has been investigated over a large male population; but such studies in buffalo bulls have been conducted over small sample size (Anzar et al., 1993; Bhakat et al., 2015; Dixit, Agarwal, Agarwal, & Dwaraknath, 1984; Mandal, Nagpaul, & Gupta, 2000; Singh, Sengupta, & Tripathi, 2001). Since, poor libido as well as poor semen quality contribute to the major culling factors in cattle and buffalo males (Kumar, Singh, Dhaliwal, & Singh, 2008; Mukhopadhyay et al., 2011).…”
