Influence of Sedimentation Rate on the Metal Contamination in Sediments of Bohai Bay, China

Abstract: Metal concentration in marine sediments is influenced by sedimentation rate. In this study, the metal concentration in sediments of Bohai Bay, China, was adjusted by sedimentation rate, which was derived from the radionuclide dating method. The results showed that the sedimentation rate of Bohai Bay sediments increased from 0.3 to 0.55 g/a over time, especially in the last 30 years since the economic reform in China. The sequence of metal concentrations (mg/kg) is: Cr(97.41) > Zn(73.14) > Cu(20.59) > Pb(16.42)… Show more

“…Our dating method was based on those used in similar studies of adjacent areas and other estuaries with strong human activity, most of which investigated pollution histories in the environment [29,30,47,57,58,61,62,63,64]. Sedimentation rates were measured by the 210 Pb method in the Department of Ecology, Jinan University.…”

“…This area is one of the most highly developed and densely populated regions in China and accounts for one quarter of the Chinese Gross Domestic Product (GDP) [24]. Bohai Bay, located in the west of the Bohai Sea and near the city of Tianjin, is a typical semi-enclosed coastal bay, with a mean depth of 12.5 m [25]. The Bohai Bay has weak water exchange with the ocean which makes the physical self-cleaning capacity of the Bay very poor [23,26].…”
