Influence of sampling conditions on blood chemistry values of Adriatic sturgeon Acipenser naccarii (Bonaparte, 1836)

Abstract: Data on the blood chemistry of a chondrostean fish, the Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii), are reported as measured with different sampling procedures, and as related to rearing conditions and age. Serum cortisol, glucose, osmolality, Na', Cr, Ca" and total protein concentrations were measured. Reference values for the blood chemistry of farmed sturgeon were measured on samples from resting undisturbed animals collected via a chronic indwelling catheter in the dorsal aorta that was implanted under anaesth… Show more

“…The stresses of fish capture and anesthetization with tricaine methanesulfonate (MS‐222) can also elicit a variety of hematologic and biochemical changes in sturgeon (Cataldi et al., ; Di Marco et al., ; Bayunova et al., ; Baker et al., ; Gomulka et al., ; Matsche, ). Differences in blood values between wild shortnose sturgeon (this study) and cultured fish (Knowles et al., ) may be greatly influenced by fish capture method.…”

“…Fish were quickly anesthetized (10 g l )1 NaCl, 420 mg l )1 NaHCO 3 , 350 mg l )1 MS-222) and bled via cardiac puncture (Houston 1990;Di Marco et al 2000 with heparinized 3-ml syringes and 18-gauge hypodermic needles. The 24-ml blood samples either were collected from larger (3-year-old) or pooled from smaller (2 year-old) sturgeon.…”
