Influence of Salt on the Solubility and Tie-Line Data for Water + Formic Acid + Methyl Isobutyl Ketone at T = 298.15 K

Abstract: The tie-line and solubility data for the systems containing formic acid (FA), water, and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) + NaCl were determined experimentally at temperature 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The effect of salt 0.05−0.15 mass fraction (base on mass of initial water) was investigated. Binary interaction parameters were ascertained by comparing the experimental tie-line data with the nonrandom two-liquid model (NRTL) correlations. The tie-line data of the systems were analyzed using the Othmer−Tob… Show more

“…The use of biodiesel to meet the global energy demand has several advantages [9]. Biodiesel is a renewable energy fuel produced from vegetable oil and animal fats [10,11]. Characterization of the oils and biodiesels provides a means of identification and quantification of the fatty acid composition of the oil and sources.…”

“…It is worth mentioning that in many studies, experimental LLE data have been correlated using the classic NRTL model, instead of the complicated electrolyte-NRTL model. 45,46 Considering the importance of the nonrandomness parameter (α ij ) in the NRTL model and to achieve the desired goodness of fitting regression, α ij was fitted with the best values of 0.2 and 0.3. 47 The values of the structural parameters r and q required for the UNIQUAC model, which is related to molecular size and shape appointing, have been reported in the literature and are listed in Table 6.…”

“…Thus, applying the classical NRTL and UNIQUAC models with the ternary component was satisfactory. It is worth mentioning that in many studies, experimental LLE data have been correlated using the classic NRTL model, instead of the complicated electrolyte-NRTL model. , …”

“…In addition, the presence of dissolved salt changes the phase equilibrium behavior of a mixture significantly [28][29][30][31]. Recently, Govindarajan and Sabarathinam [32], Mohsen-Nia et al [33], and Santos et al [34] have investigated effects of some inorganic salts such as Na 2 SO 4 , ZnSO 4 , (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , NaCl, KCl, KBr, and NaNO 3 on the ternary liquid-liquid equilibria data.…”
