Abstract:The problem of limited water supply in the Vhembe District (Limpopo Province, South Africa) is exacerbated by a preponderance of dissolved salts, which cause disagreeable taste and odour in the water as reported by the communities using this water for drinking. The water treatment plant that supplies the treated water to the communities in the District sources this raw water from the Nandoni Dam at the Luvuvhu river catchment. There are no scientific studies that have been reported in the literature that focused on determining the levels of water salinity from various water sources in the municipalities of the District. Water samples from various sites across the Nandoni Dam, a primary source of domestic water supply in the region, were collected through each season over a period of twelve months in order to ascertain the concentrations of dissolved salts in the dam. Onsite analyses of the water samples were conducted using the YSI ProDSS multimeter, while the laboratory water analyses were conducted using the spectroquant and atomic absorption spectrometers. Although salinity tests seem to indicate that the water sampled across most of the Nandoni Dam is brackish during all seasons of the year with the highest being 750 mg/L, water samples from the dam mid-outlet and the treatment plant are slightly below the World Health Organization (WHO) brackish water bracket of 500 mg/L with unfavourable taste for drinking. Results from this study indicate that the water sourced from the Nandoni Dam is not suitable for human consumption and therefore requires integrated water resource management, as well as robust and cost-effective water desalination treatment.

Establishment of an appropriate vegetation system for reclamation of saline‐sodic soils requires studies for specific salt‐affected region(s). The phytoremediation of saline‐sodic soils has not been well documented in the Songnen Plain of northeast China. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of grass (G) and maize (Zea mays L.; M) vegetation systems, which were established for 5 years, on soil properties of 10 typical saline‐sodic sampling sites across the Songnen Plain, in comparison with respective nonvegetated areas that were used as controls (CK) for the evaluation of variability among the sampling sites. Physicochemical properties, such as soil moisture, bulk density, porosity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, aggregate stability, pH, electric conductivity, total salt, organic C, total N, and C/N ratio, were analyzed. G and M vegetation significantly produced a 108% and 153% improvement in soil quality, respectively. Additionally, metagenomic analysis of the soil bacterial community revealed that vegetation enhanced the ability of the bacteria to survive in saline‐sodic soils, relative to the control. The composition of the bacterial community was highly correlated with all of the soil physicochemical properties. G vegetation had better effects than M vegetation in enhancing soil organic C, total N and aggregate stability, whereas M vegetation more favorably adjusted soil pH, physical structure, and bacterial community than G vegetation did. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that M vegetation has a greater impact than G vegetation on repairing saline‐sodic soils in the Songnen Plain of northeast China.

SUMMARYGlobal climate models shows patterns of temperature and precipitation changes worldwide. Soil moisture and type of fertilization are key determinants of the microbial processes that determine the fluxes of gases from soil. There are not many research activities including the assessment how land conversion to the grassland can influence the greenhouse effect. The aim of this study was to determine the biomass content of microorganisms in soil and CO 2 and CH 4 emissions in conditions of diversified nitrogen fertilization and soil moisture in the cultivation of pot grass mixtures. The results of the study were treated by two-factor analysis of variance. The linear correlation between analysed gases and between microbial biomass and CO 2 or CH 4 emissions was performed. The volume of soil microbial biomass in the cultivation of grass mixtures was affected by the type of nitrogen fertilization and the level of soil moisture. Approximately 1.5 times bigger microbial biomass was found after fertilization than under control conditions. The same relationship occurred in the comparison between the microbial biomass during wet and dry conditions. Only the volume of CO 2 emission in this pot experiment was affected by the type of nitrogen fertilization. Higher emission of CO 2 was accompanied by increased emission of CH 4 . In humid conditions, both mineral and organic fertilization affected positively on soil microbial biomass and the volume of CO 2 emission. From the viewpoint of reducing greenhouse gases emission, inorganic fertilizers used in dry conditions during the land conversion to the grassland, would be the best grassland cultivation method.
