Influence of polyester spacer fabric, cotton, chloroprene rubber, and silicone on microclimatic and morphologic physiologic skin parameters in vivo

Abstract: Background Skin diseases can develop upon disadvantageous microclimate in relation to skin contact with textiles of supporting devices. Increased temperature, moisture, mechanical fracture, pressure, and inflammatory processes often occur mutually and enhance each other in their adverse effects. Therefore, the early prevention of skin irritations by improvement of microclimatic properties of skin in contact with supporting devices is important. Materials and Methods In this study, the microclimate under occlus… Show more

“…The epidermal renewal entails a loss of ≈1 corneocyte layer per day [50] out of the ≈10-15 layers of corneocytes, of which the SC consists [30]. A further, albeit unlikely explanation could be effects of washing and contact to clothes for longer time periods [51]. Figure 3 shows the NMF concentration profiles in the SC.…”

“…However, mandating mask and respirator use might not lead to use, suggesting that barriers to use are important considerations when mandating specific PPE ( 16 ). During the pandemic, HCWs have needed to wear PPE for several hours and days in a row, rendering them susceptible to adverse events (AEs) associated with prolonged contact between mask material and the skin ( 17 , 18 , 19 ), such as injury and absenteeism ( 20 ), prompting measures to be taken to protect the skin of HCWs wearing PPE ( 21 ).…”
