Influence of peracetic acid onEscherichia coliH10407 strain in laboratory microcosms

Abstract: The bactericidal properties of peracetic acid (PAA) were tested using Escherichia coli H10407, in sterilized artificial seawater, sewage effluent water, and distilled water microcosms. No LT enterotoxin synthesis was detected by GM1 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of the water supernatants, but a specific fragment of the eltB gene was always amplified by polymerase chain reaction for 21 days after PAA treatment. The resuscitation capacity of starved cells was assayed in rich medium and their inability to ove… Show more

“…Sulphhydryl and sulphur bonds within enzymes of microbial cells are probably disrupted by PAA and oxidative disruption causes the breaking of main membrane components. Thus, biochemical pathways, intracellular levels of solute and active transport across membranes undergo damage (Jolivet-Gougeon et al 1996). Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) determined that PAA created holes in the microbial cell (Zhang et al 2019).…”

“…To apply PAA in safe concentration for water system utilities (avoid corrosion), the combination of high temperature (>40°C) and contact time (>10 min) at PAA concentration (>0Á25%) seems to be logical strategy. The behaviour of PAA as a water disinfectant on planktonic cells was investigated in several studies (Jolivet-Gougeon et al 1996;Profaizer et al 1997;Murthy and Venkatesan 2008). PAA even at dose of 1Á5 mg l À1 removes coliform up to 4 log units (Profaizer et al 1997).…”

“…O mecanismo de ação do APA é descrito por Jolivet-Gougeon et al (1996) como um rompimento nas ligações sulfídricas e sulfúricas das enzimas que compõe a membrana celular, prejudicando atividades como: o transporte ativo através da membrana e os níveis de soluto dentro das células.…”

“…Maintenance of such characteristics for enterobacteria in seawater has been widely explored during the last decades. Most of these studies, however, focused on maintenance of pathogene-city by VBNC cells and produced conflicting results (Baleux et al, 1998;Ben Kahla-Nakbi et al, 2007;Du et al, 2007;Grimes and Colwell, 1986;Jolivet-Gougeon et al, 1996Kolling and Matthews, 2001;Linder and Olivier, 1989;Pommepuy et al, 1996;Rahman et al, 1994Rahman et al, , 1996.…”
