Influence of pentavalent dopant addition to polarization and bioactivity of hydroxyapatite

Abstract: Influence of pentavalent tantalum doping in bulk hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics has been investigated for polarizability and bioactivity. Phase analysis from X-ray diffraction measurement indicates that increasing dopant concentration decreased the amount of HAp phase and increased β-TCP and/or α-TCP phases during sintering at 1250 °C in a muffle furnace. Results from thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) measurements showed that doping hindered charge storage ability in HAp ceramics, and doped sam… Show more

“…20 The characteristic diffraction peaks for Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (β-TCP) are observed in HA_Ta1100 composites in both atmospheres, which indicates that the presence of Ta accelerated the decomposition of HA. A similar finding that Ta made HA phase more unstable was reported by Dhal et al 21 The formation of Ca m Ta 2n O m+5n reduces the ratio of Ca/P of HA, which contributes to the formation of TCP due to a lower Ca/P ratio for TCP. For HA_Ta1100 and HA_Ta1200 composites, HA and β-TCP peaks are observed in both atmospheres.…”

“…However, after 5 days of incubation, cell proliferation is statistically significantly higher on HA_Ta1100 composites sintered in Ar compared to those sintered in air. Previously, it had been reported that the hydrophilic surface supports better cell adhesion and spread. , Hence, the current results show that cell adhesion was enhanced on a more hydrophilic surface for HA_Ta1100 composites sintered in Ar.…”

“…The phase concentrations (PC) of 85.80%, 12.16%, and 2.04% for the Fe 2 MgTi 3 O 10 , CaTiO 3 , and Fe 3 O 4 phases, respectively, of the 1050°C sintered material (is illustrated in Table ) were calculated from the relative peak area of crystalline planes according to a novel approach using the Equation . The main advantages of this method over the relative intensity method are: (i) there is no need of any standard reference material in relative peak area method for comparison, (ii) it is independent of amount of sample used which, some time, can change intensity counts during XRD test, and (iii) thus accuracy and repeatability would be better. The crystallite size ( t ) (i.e., calculated by modified Debye‐Scherrer Equation S1) for the developed nanocomposite sintered at 850°C is depicted in Table .…”

“…Tantalum (Ta) doping of HA was rarely explored [324,325]. Ta-HA was shown to increase human osteoblast cell proliferation, hinder charge storage ability, but at the same time induce the partial decomposition of HA into β- and α-tricalcium phosphate [324].…”
