Influence of pathogens and moderate leukocytes on seminal interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and sperm parameters

Abstract: Moderate leukocyte counts could be an indicator of male genital tract inflammation. Seminal pathogens have no influence on cytokine levels and sperm parameters.

“…In addition, the 75th percentile of IL-6 and IL-8 was used to define "high" levels of these cytokines in semen. On this basis, Eggert-Kruse et al 16 As previously reported, 18 we associated moderate leukocytes with increased levels of seminal IL-6 and IL-8, which raised questions concerning the diagnostic significance of leukocytospermia. Thus, we examined the patient population, as presented in our earlier study, 18 in greater detail using ROC curves.…”

“…Previous studies reported that leukocytospermia could exert a negative effect on semen quality [11,27] . We demonstrated that human semen samples with leukocytospermia showed lower levels of omentin-1, concomitant with higher level of seminal ROS, which has been reported to exert a negative effect on sperm quality [21,22] ,We hypothesize that the presence of leukocytes in semen, low level of omentin-1 and decreasing semen quality, could indicate a typical inflammation profile.…”

“…Elevated cytokine presence in the semen has been also attributed to pathogens [135,162,166]. However, there are studies in which seminal pathogens have been found to have no influence on cytokine levels [167,168]. Among the various inflammatory cytokines, seminal IL-1b, IL-6, and IL-18 have been proposed for the role of specific biomarkers discriminating between patients with or without MAGI [165,169,170].…”
