Influence of Nutrition on Mammary Development in Pre- and Postpubertal Heifers

Abstract: This experiment investigated the influence of plane of nutrition on mammary development in heifers. Prepubertal and postpubertal heifers were fed a ration 60:40 concentrate to forage in restricted or ad libitum amounts. Dry matter intake of the heifers on restricted feeding was 60% that of heifers fed ad libitum. Average daily gain of heifers on restricted feeding was 613 g compared with 1218 g for heifers fed ad libitum. Ad libitum feeding during prepuberty lowered mammary secretory tissue weights 23% and deo… Show more

“…This result is in agreement with data previously reported in ovines (Johnsson and Hart, 1985;Johnsson et al, 1986;McCann et al, 1989;McFadden et al, 1990;Peclaris et al, 1994 and1997) and bovines (Sejrsen et al, 1982;Capuco et al, 1995;Charles et al, 1999;Meyer et al, 2006). In rodents, mammary parenchymal development occurs by gradual invasion of the mammary fat pad.…”

“…The effect of plane of nutrition on mammary growth has been extensively studied in bovines. Sejrsen et al (1982) found in dairy heifers that a 50% growth restriction improved parenchymal content in the mammary gland. Similarly, Capuco et al (1995) found lower DNA content in the mammary gland of dairy heifers fed a high plane of nutrition.…”

“…Nutrition of the animal is a key environmental factor affecting milk production, either directly, during lactation, or indirectly, through mammary development. Sejrsen et al (1982) showed that a high plane of nutrition during the first 9 months of a heifer's life may lead to changes in the mammary tissue, resulting in a lower subsequent milk yield. Furthermore, nutrition during gestation may influence not only subsequent lactation (Park et al, 1989) but also performance during the second lactation (Ford and Park, 2001).…”
