Influence of Nasogastric Tubes on Swallowing in Stroke Patients: Measuring Hyoid Bone Movement With Ultrasonography

Abstract: ObjectiveTo investigate the influence of a nasogastric tube (NGT) on swallowing simulated saliva in stroke patients.MethodsThree groups of participants were enrolled into the study: group A (20 stroke patients with a NGT), a control group B (25 stroke patients without a NGT), and group C (25 healthy adults with no brain lesions or dysphagia). Participants swallowed 1 mL of water to simulate saliva. Patients in group A were tested twice: once with a NGT (group A1) and once after the NGT was removed (group A2). … Show more

“…Worldwide, South Korea had the second highest incidence rate of CRC in 2018, with the rate estimated to be 44.5 cases per 100,000 persons per year 1 . In South Korea, the leading cause of death is cancer 2 , of which CRC death ranked third after lung and liver cancer deaths 3 . With CRC imposing a large burden on human health both globally and locally, identification of etiologic factors driving a rise in CRC incidence rates in South Korea has important implications for public health.…”

“…The OE tube is an easy-to-use procedure in swallowing therapy, enabling interventions such as oro-motor facilitation and therapeutic diets because there is no space-occupying material in the oral cavity, as with the NG tube. The NG tube itself could interfere with hyoid bone movement in stroke patients during swallowing 8. The OE tube also induces a lower risk of complications, such as aspiration pneumonia, gastric mucosal ulceration or bleeding, and diarrhea, compared with the NG tube 7.…”

“…NG tube feeding can be a proper alternative enteral feeding method; however, it is inconvenient and sometimes causes complications such as aspiration pneumonia, gastroesophageal reflux, and diarrhea 7. Furthermore, NG tube feeding can interfere with hyoid bone movement in stroke patients during swallowing 8. In addition, long-term use of NG tubes can lead to gastric mucosal ulcers, reflux, or bleeding.…”

“…Untuk itu penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran diagnosis utama yang sering muncul pada pasien-pasien dengan gangguan neurologi di bangsal perawatan. Kwak et al (2018) dinyatakan bahwa kejadian disfagia pada fase akut stroke sebanyak 25%-34,4%. Hal ini didukung oleh penelitian lain bahwa kejadian disfagia paling tinggi pada fase akut stroke.…”
