“…Sperm plasma membranes, however, suffered no obvious damage as the highest membrane integrity values were obtained in skim milk glucose extender. High sperm motility after storage in skim milk extender despite the removal of SP has also been reported (Webb and Arns, 1995). Our results suggest that sperm from different stallions differ in their sensitivity to the absence of SP in skim milk extender.…”

“…Before cooled semen storage, SP is either removed by centrifugation or its influence is reduced by dilution with an extender. Webb and Arns (1995) reported that the removal of SP and the dilution of sperm with skim milk extender containing modified Tyrode's medium (KMT) improved motion characteristics during cooled storage of spermatozoa. KMT, however, was detrimental to sperm motility in the presence of SP (Rigby et al, 2001).…”

“…Skim milk extenders may not be ideal if all seminal plasma has been removed (Jasko et al 1992). The negative effect of centrifugation in Expt 1 could perhaps have been altered by supplementing skim milk extender with a modified Tyrode's media (Padilla and Foote 1991;Webb and Arns 1995). Plasma membrane integrity was not significantly affected by the presence or absence of seminal plasma in our experiments, and there were no significant differences between cups.…”

“…If all seminal plasma is removed, skim milk is not a suitable extender. Addition of a modified high-potassium Tyrode's medium to skim milk extender during cooled storage of ≥24 h in the total absence of seminal plasma has yielded good sperm motility; but if any seminal plasma is left, skim milk alone is better than addition of Tyrode's medium (Padilla and Foote 1991, Webb and Arns 1995, Rigby et al 2001. The effect of seminal plasma during storage may also depend on the temperature; 5°C, room temperature and 40°C have given different results (Wöckener et al 1990, Sieme et al 2001.…”
