In multilayered structures, sharp interface is formed between the layers of dissimilar materials. "t this interface, the large difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the two dissimilar materials generates residual thermal stresses during subsequent cooling. These stresses lead to cracking at the interface, and these cracks lead to the deterioration of mechanical properties, and finally crack propagation leads to the delamination of the multilayered structure. Scientific progress in the field of material technology, and the continuing developments of modern industries have given rise to the continual demand for ever more advanced materials with the necessary properties and qualities. The need for advanced materials with specific properties has brought about the gradual transformation of materials from their basic states monolithic to composites. Recent advances in engineering and the processing of materials have led to a new class of graded multilayered materials called Functionally Graded Materials FGMs . These materials represent a second generation of composites and have been designed to achieve superior levels of performance. This chapter looks at the best processing technologies and the uses and applications of the advanced, high quality products generated, and also presents an extensive review of the recent novel advances in Functionally Graded Ceramics FGCs , their processing, properties and applications. The manufacturing techniques involved in this work have involved many concepts from the gradation, consolidation and different sintering processes. Each technique, however, has its own characteristics and disadvantages. In addition, the FGC concept can be applied to almost all material fields. This chapter covers all the existing and potential application fields of FGCs, such as engineering applications in cutting tools, machine parts, and engine components, and discusses properties of FGCs such as heat, wear, and corrosion resistance plus toughness, and their machinability into aerospace and energy applications.

Nanostructured calcium phosphate functionally graded materials (FGMs) with simultaneous gradients of density, phase composition, and mechanical properties were fabricated by consecutive uniaxial pressing of stoichiometric (SHAp) and calcium deficient (CDHAp) hydroxyapatite powders in multilayered samples and reaction sintering. During sintering procedure SHAp composition remained stable (HAp) while CDHAp was phase transformed in biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP, i.e. HAp þβ-TCP) yielding HAp/BCP FGMs. To reduce mismatch stress between adjacent layers, generated during sintering, gradient of phase composition was optimized by introducing intermediate layer(s) made from a mixture of SHAp and CDHAp in an appropriate mass ratio. Optimal processing conditions for preparation of nanostructured ceramics were provided via two-step sintering. High-quality FGMs structure, without delamination, cracks and micro-structural damages was observed by an SEM technique; moreover, a detailed examination by FE-SEM established the unidirectional (perpendicular with respect to the layers) gradual change of microstructure, from fully dense to $40% of porosity. Detailed micro-Raman and FTIR spectroscopy studies showed an increase of β-TCP amount along the FGMs height, confirming gradient of phase composition. Mechanical properties measured by microindentation revealed gradual change of microhardness from 650 to 115 HV, with simultaneous change of Young's modulus from 92 to 24 GPa.

The objective was to explore the curative effect of prolonged third generation of gamma nail (pTGN) and prolonged dynamic hip screw (pDHS) internal fixation in treating femoral intertrochanteric fracture, and analyze the incidence rate of infection for better clinical diagnosis and treatment. Sixty five patients with femoral intertrochanteric fracture during February, 2011-February, 2013 were selected and divided into two groups, with one receiving pTGN (control group) and the other one receiving pDHS internal fixation (observation group). The clinical effects of two groups were compared. In control group, the excellent and good rate was 78.13 %, the total effective rate was 87.5 %, and the total complication rate was 6.24 %; in observation group, the excellent and good rate was 78.79 %, the total effective rate was 90.91 %, the total complication rate was 6.06 %; there was no statistical difference between two groups (p > 0.05). The operation time, the intraoperative fluoroscopy time, and the total blood loss had statistically significant difference between two groups (p < 0.05); however, the differences of the total length of incision, the length of preoperative hospitalization, postoperative ambulatory episode, and the length of stay between two groups were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Both pTGN and pDHS internal fixation were effective on femoral intertrochanteric fracture, with pDHS internal fixation having better overall efficiency.
