“…Monosubstituted simple coumarins, such as 6-methylcoumarin, 7-methylcoumarin, 7-methoxycoumarin as well as 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin, also induce mitotic aberrations analogous to those which were induced by scoparone (Nuti Ronchi & Arcara, 1967;Buiatti & Nuti Ronchi, 1969;Abel & Schimmer, 1981, Kupidĺowska et al, 1995. Moreover, the sister chromatid exchanges were also induced by Nmethylated oxypurines (Kihlman et al, 1971).…”

“…In our laboratory, the reaction of meristematic cells with several monosubstituted derivatives of coumarin was investigated independently of UV-A. The studies revealed that the intensity of mitodepression, its reversibility during postincubation, and disturbances of mitosis depend on the type and position of the substituent (Kupidĺowska et al, 1995;Podbielkowska et al, 1995). However, little is known about the effects exerted by disubstituted coumarin derivatives.…”

“…The absence of chromosomal aberrations has been observed when the mitodepressive activity of coumarin 200 ppm was investigated with Levan's test on meristematic cells from Allium cepa root tips (Podbielkowska et al, 1994). The probability that the energy metabolism of cells affected by coumarin is altered has been supported by observation of morphological changes in mitochondria, including dense matrices and large dilated cristae (Kupidlowska et al, 1996). Morphological alterations such as these lead to a loss of oxidative phosphorylation and the generation of ATP which is required for DNA synthesis.…”

“…Coumarin (1,2-benzopyrone) is a higher plantderived secondary metabolite capable of altering the energy metabolism of cells by inhibiting glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation (Kupidlowska et al, 1994(Kupidlowska et al, , 1996. Coumarin has been found to be a promising anticancer drug as it has exhibited antimitotic action on promeristematic cells of Allium cepa L. in Levan's test (Podbielkowska et al, 1994;Keightley et al, 1996) and lowered the vitality of melanoma cells without causing chromosomal aberrations (Wierzchowska-Renke et al, 1998).…”
