Influence of inoculation with a Trichoderma bio‐inoculant on ectomycorrhizal colonisation of Pinus radiata seedlings

Abstract: Trichoderma species, through mechanisms such as mycoparasitism, antibiosis, induced resistance and competition, are able to suppress the growth and activity of soil microbes and therefore have the potential to influence ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal colonisation. ECM colonisation potential of Pinus radiata seedlings inoculated with the commercially available Trichoderma species bio-inoculant, ArborGuard™, was investigated in a commercial containerised nursery setting and in a separate glasshouse experiment. “…Trichoderma asperellum, T. viride, T. harzianum, and T. atroviride are the main species used in biological preparations as effective bio-pesticides against pathogenic Fusarium, Pythium, Phytophthora, Alternaria, Sclerotinia, Botrytis, and others (Regliński et al 2012;Minchin et al 2012). Although their effectiveness has been confirmed (Sierota 1976;Howell 2006;Tucci et al 2011;Patil et al 2012), some authors (e.g., Kredics et al 2003) dispute the unambiguous antagonistic properties of Trichoderma against pathogens.…”

“…According to the biological species concept, a 'species' is defined as one or more groups of interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups that occupy a specific ecological niche (Mayr 1942). In such a context, genetic information can be transmitted only within a species.…”
