Influence of infusion line compliance on drug delivery rate during acute line loop formation

Abstract: Infusion line compliance contributes to irregular drug delivery associated with vertical displacement of syringe pumps. Siphoning of the infusion line during patient care should be avoided, and flow rates of 1 ml/h or higher are recommended. Low-compliance infusion lines are indicated whenever highly short-acting vasoactive drugs at low delivery rates are administered.

“…7 Infusion line compliance may further influence pump performance substantially. 9 The importance of using the original stiff, low compliant tube extension set with a very small inner diameter was demonstrated by the four-fold increase in ZDDT when it was replaced by the soft, more compliant Injectomat® infusion line (Table II). 9 The design of the tested PMV infusion device results in minimal mechanical gaps, a low overall system compliance and contributes to its optimized functional performance.…”

“…The compliance of the drug delivery tubing affects the variability of its infusion rate, affecting the time to initiate the occlusion alarm, time without flow, suction volume, and bolus volume during vertical movements of the syringe pump [16,17]. The impact of this factor is further enhanced in combination with high volume syringes (50 mL) and low flow programming.…”
