Influence of inflammation on parasitism and area of experimental amoebic liver abscess: an immunohistochemical and morphometric study

Abstract: The influence of inflammation on the number of trophozoites and on the murine amoebic liver abscess area following infection with Entamoeba histolytica and E. dispar was evaluated. Immunohistochemistry and digital morphometry were used to identify and quantify the trophozoites, neutrophils, macrophages, and lesions. Positive correlation was observed between the number of trophozoites and inflammatory cells. A significant decrease in parasitism and inflammation in groups treated with dexamethasone was observed.… Show more

“…Islands of better preserved liver tissue were also seen scattered among the necrotic foci. Moreover, serum sample could easily be obtained from [5][6][7] days post-infected hamster, and contained sufficient polyclonal antibodies that recognize E. histolytica trophozoites [20] .…”

“…All analyses were performed with a Nikon Eclipse microscope using 10×, 40×, and 100× planachromatic objectives for transmitted light microscopy and birefringent lenses for polarized light microscopy. In addition, inflammatory cell number were analyzed and calculated as the mean of four regions in each H.E.‐stained histological section similar to Costa et al (2011). The microscope was coupled to the SD‐3.3 CCD image acquisition system of the Department of Morphology and Basic Pathology, Faculty of Medicine of Jundiaí.…”
