Influence of Heat Treatment and Tannin Impregnation on Boron Depletion and Wood Durability

Abstract: Heat treatment (HT) of a mixture of tannins and inorganic boron compounds showed effective results against wood decay organisms. Boron compounds play a critical role in the preservation of wood against wood decay organisms. The use of tannins and HT represents a relatively new environmentally friendly approach to the wood preservation industry. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of tannin impregnation and HT on boron depletion, and termite and fungi resistance. Southern yellow pine (SYP) and y… Show more

“…Borates have a great performance in interior applications, but its fixation problem restrain its use in outdoor exposure. Although fixation of boron compounds has been extensively studied (Huang et al, 2018;Murthy et al, 2019;Verly Lopes et al, 2020;Bhatt and Tripathi, 2021;Ibañez et al, 2021), it is still recommended only for interior purposes by AWPA (American Wood Protection Association [AWPA], 2019c). As mass timber products become more popular in North America, borates may serve as a great preservative as well as fire retardant.…”

“…Boron compound is rarely applied alone in recent studies; rather it has been engineered by altering the method and adding other materials. The additional material can be used to cover wood surface (Priadi et al, 2021;Temiz et al, 2008) or as adhesive (Thévenon et al, 1998;Verly Lopes et al, 2020) to keep boron consistency in the wood.…”

“…Borates have excellent performance in indoor applications, but their fixation problem constrains their use outdoors. Although the fixation of borate compounds has been extensively studied [29][30][31][32][33], it is still recommended by AWPA (American Wood Protection Association) only for interior applications [34]. This is due to the fact that boroncontaining preservatives include trivalent boron compounds.…”
