Influence of Excess Weight Loss and Weight Regain on Biochemical Indicators During a 4-Year Follow-up After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

“…As demonstrated by our results and in other studies, rates of weight loss are higher during the first year after surgery, primarily in the first 6 months, followed by slower progressive weight loss two years after surgery, brief stabilization, then weight regain (2,5,12). Therefore, the %EWL at six months is a potentially valid index of surgical success.…”

“…Mechanisms that may underlie weight regain include dilatation of the gastric pouch because of consumption of larger amounts of food, hypercaloric food ingestion, physiologic increase in nutrient absorption capacity in bowel, alcohol consumption, sedentarism, and hormonal adaptations (4,5).…”

“…As previously described [29,35], both treatments promoted significant weight losses and improved serum glucose levels and lipid profile. It is important to highlight that the low baseline glucose levels found in the BS group may be attributed to an early improvement caused by the dietary treatment precribed before the surgery protocol [36].…”

“…The main benefits of this intervention include significant and sustainable weight loss, amelioration of obesity-related disorders [2,3], and improvement of quality of life [4]. Amendments in lipid metabolism are very commonly observed in obese patients, represented by elevated triglycerides and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels [5].…”
