Background: Microorganisms in rivers and lakes are essential for nutrient recycling in aquatic ecosystems. Understanding the ecological processes shaping microbial communities is of crucial importance for aquatic microbial ecology and biogeography. However, the diversity of microorganisms and the forces that control this diversity are poorly understood. This is particularly true within the framework of the river-lake continuum in arid regions. Results: Using a whole catchment-sampling effort, we explored biogeographical patterns and mechanisms of microbial community (bacteria and archaea) assembly within the catchment of the largest inland once freshwater lake (Lake Bosten) in China. Water samples from headstream tributaries, the mainstream of the River Kaidu to downstream Lake Bosten were characterized using amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Higher α-diversity was found in mainstream of River Kaidu and in the tributaries compared with Lake Bosten. And the microbial community composition was also significantly different between the lake and its connected river habitats. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that salinity and total suspended solids were the most important environmental factors shaping the community variations. Overall, pure environmental and pure spatial factors explained 13.7 and 5.6% of the community variation, respectively, while 32.0% of the variation was explained by combined environmental and spatial variables. These observations suggested that spatially structured environmental variations mainly shaped the microbial biogeography in this region. Both deterministic and stochastic processes influenced the microbial community assembly in river and lake habitats, and the stochastic pattern was particularly pronounced for microbiome in river habitat. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed more abundant and complicated correlations among frequently occurred taxa in lake habitat compared with the river habitat, implying that ecological multispecies interactions (e.g., competition) shaped lake microbial community structures. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate an ecological succession along the river-lake continuum of microbial communities across the largest inland once freshwater lake basin in China, and highlight the effects of spatially structured environmental factors on regional microbial β-diversity and species interactions on local community assembly.

ABSTRAKTelah dilakukan penelitian tentang komunitas plankton di Danau Segara Anak, Pulau Lombok, Indonesia. Danau tersebut adalah danau vulkanik tertinggi di Indonesia. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan struktur komunitas plankton dan mengeksplorasi pola perubahan komunitas secara spasial dan temporal. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa komunitas plankton terdiri dari 39 spesies fitoplankton dan 5 spesies zooplankton. Indeks keanekaragaman dan keseragaman spesies fitoplankton berturut-turut 3,064 dan 0,029, sedangkan indeks keanekaragaman dan keseragaman spesies untuk zooplankton berturut-turut 1,352 dan 0,060. Hasil analisis statistik menunjukkan tidak terdapat perbedaan signifikan secara spasial dan temporal pada kekayaan spesies, kemelimpahan dan indeks keanekragaman fitoplankton dan zooplankton di Danau Segara Anak. Perbedaan signifikan hanya terlihat pada kekayaan spesies dan indeks keanekaragaman spesies zooplankton antara bagian permukaan dan dasar danau.Kata kunci : keanekaragaman, fitoplankton, zooplankton, Danau Segara Anak. ABSTRACTPlankton community was studied at the Lake of Segara Anak, Lombok Island, Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to describe community structure of plankton and to explore spatial and temporal pattern. The results show there were 39 species of phytoplankton and 5 species of zooplankton. Species diversity and similarity indices of phytoplankton were 3.064 and 0.029 respectively, while the species diversity and similarity indices of zooplankton were 1.352 and 0.060 respectively. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference spatially and temporally on the species richness, abundance, diversity index and similarity index of zooplankton and phytoplankton. Significant difference was only found on the average of species richnes and diversity index of zooplankton between the surface and the bottom of the lake.

This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 LicenseModern methodological approaches were applied to analyze the zooplankton community spatial distribution (with the example of the middle river part of the Cheboksary Reservoir). Zooplankton communities were sampled in the middle river part of the Cheboksary Reservoir (from the city of Nizhny Novgorod to Vasilsursk town) in the summer low-water period in 2018. The boundaries between the communities in the Cheboksary Reservoir were gradually changing during the history of the Cheboksary Reservoir from the time of its construction to present. In the middle river part of the Cheboksary Reservoir there are two distinct spatially stable zooplankton communities associated to the Oka and Volga streams. The distinction between these two zooplankton communities was demonstrated by hierarchical cluster analysis. Redundancy analysis has shown that chlorophyll-a and pH were the main factors influencing the specific zooplankton structure.Chlorophyll-a concentration reflects the meso-scale heterogeneity of the horizontal phytoplankton distribution and hence the distribution of the zooplankton's food sources. The relation of zooplankton to pH level reflects the high sensitivity of the species of the genus Brachionus Pallas, 1766 to high acidity. The influence of pH as an environmental factor was less evident. However, this variable is well known as one of the leading factors determining the structure of zooplankton communities. Its role in zooplankton community assembly of lowland reservoirs deserves further investigation.
