Purpose This study attempted to examine the influence of resilience, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being on attitude to death. Methods A predictive correlational design was used. The participants were 184 nursing students from three universities of Korea. They responded to a self-report questionnaire, with items on demographics, resilience, life satisfaction, psychological well-being, and attitude to death. Results The mean score for attitude to death was 2.77±0.39 (range, 1–4), and a significant difference was observed depending on age, grade, and death-related education. Attitude to death was positively correlated with death-related education, resilience, life satisfaction, and psychological well-being. Results of the hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that death-related education and psychological well-being were significant predictors of attitude to death, explaining 26.6% of the latter. The most important factor was psychological well-being. Conclusion Although death-related education and psychological well-being are two of the most influential factors among nursing students, no more than 30.4% of this study’s participants received death-related education. Death-related education is necessary to help nursing students so that they can cope positively with stressful situations by finding positive meaning. It is necessary to develop a systematic curriculum so that these students can establish a positive attitude to death.

The Effects of Empathy on Interpersonal Relationship through the Mediating Effect of Egoresilience in Nursing Students

The study was performed to investigate the effects of empathy on interpersonal relationships through the mediating effect of ego-resilience in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from June 5 to 30, 2018 using a self-report questionnaire measuring empathy, interpersonal relationships and ego-resilience. The sample was 204 nursing college students. SPSS WIN 23.0 programs were used to analyze the data. Results: Ego-resilience was positively related to empathy (r= .37, p< .001) and interpersonal relationships (r= .36, p< .001) and empathy was positively related to interpersonal relationships (r= .37, p< .001). Regression analysis showed that ego-resilience was affected by empathy (β = 0.37, p < .001), interpersonal relationships were affected by empathy (β= 0.37, p< .001). Interpersonal relationships were affected by empathy (β= 0.28, p< .001) and ego-resilience (β= 0.26, p< .001). Therefore ego-resilience mediates between empathy and interpersonal relationships. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop an effective intervention program to improve nursing students' empathy and ego-resilience.

This study desires to suggest base line data to develop program of adjustment to college life and intervention program for improvement of emotional intelligence and stress coping of nursing students in the future, by understanding emotional intelligence, stress coping, and adjustment to college life of nursing students, and establishing the relationship between them. Subjects were 227 associate nursing students (1st and 2nd grade) in Korea. The data were collected using self-report questionnaire from September 16 to 22, 2015. Data were analyzed by frequencies, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression using SPSS Win 23.0. Significant correlations were found between emotional intelligence, stress coping, and adjustment to college life in nursing students. As a result of an analysis through Pearson's correlations to confirm the effect on adjustment to college life of emotional intelligence and stress coping of nursing students, correlations of emotional intelligence and stress coping (r=.294, p<.001) of nursing students, emotional intelligence and adjustment to college life (r=.534, p<.001), and stress coping and adjustment to college life (r=.301, p<.001) show a meaningful positive correlation. These findings indicate that there is a need to improve emotional intelligence and stress coping to encourage adjustment to college life in nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and test the program for improving emotional intelligence of nursing students.
