Influence of different linkage groups in biphenyl mesogenic core on phase behaviors of mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers

Abstract: The work focuses on the design, synthesis, and characterization of a series of mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers (MJLCPs) based on the octyl substituted biphenyl mesogenic core through different linkage groups. The molecular characterizations of the polymers obtained by conventional free radical polymerization were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) behaviors were investigated in detail by a combination of … Show more

“…[10][11][12] In the past few decades, many MJLCPs have been designed with novel structures and potential for applications as electroluminescent materials, [13][14][15][16][17] birefringent lms for optical compensators, 18 surface-modifying agents 19 and so on. MJLCPs with side-chain cores based on 2-vinylhydroquinone, 11 2-vinyl-1,4-phenylenediamine, 20 2-vinylterephthalic acid, [21][22][23] vinyl terphenyl, 24,25 and vinyl biphenyl [26][27][28][29] have been synthesized. Various LC phases have been obtained, such as hexagonal columnar (F H ) phases, [30][31][32] columnar nematic (F N ) phases, 22,28 hexatic columnar nematic (F HN ) phases, 22,23 rectangular columnar (F R ) phases, 33 and smectic A (S m A) and smectic C (S m C) phases.…”
