Influence of DEAE Dextran upon Pig Lymphocyte Stimulation by Aujeszky Disease Virus Antigen

Abstract: Introduction DEAE-D is a potent adjuvant in inactivated foot-and-mouth disease and Aujeszky disease vaccines, enhancing antibody formation and protection against challenge infection, especially in pigs (SKODA and WITTMANN, 1973; WITTMANN et al., 1970 WITTMANN et al., , 1972. It has been demonstrated that inactivated virus is not adsorbed to DEAE-D, and that DEAE-D exerts its adjuvant effect even if it is separately injected locally and temporally from the inactivated virus WITTMANN et al., 1975). In vitro s… Show more

“…The polycation DD is a weak mitogen for mouse lymphocytes, acting on B as well as on T cells and enhancing the effect of Con A and LPS (BARTEN-BACH and WITTMANN, 1976). Furthermore, DD stimulates pig lymphocytes and enhances Aujeszky disease virus (ADV) specific stimulation of ADV-sensitized pig lymphocytes (WITTMANN and BARTENBACH, 1977). DD enhances in vivo the reactivity of pig lymphocytes against antigens (WITTMANN and JAKUBIK, 1978).…”

“…This may indicate that the antibodies find other activating substances in the pig in vivo. O n the other hand, we do not know yet what role is played by the cell-mediated immunity after the application of a DEAE dextran-containing inactivated vaccine, since DEAE dextran acts on lymphocyte reactions which are typical for cell-mediated immunity: it enhances ADV-specific stimulation of ADV-sensitized lymphocytes (WITTMANN and BARTENBACH, 1977), it enhances stimulation of mouse T cells by concanavalin A (BARTENBACH and WITTMANN, 1976), and 52'1 it enhances the mixed lymphocyte reaction of pig lymphocytes (in preparation).…”
