ABSTRACT.We evaluated the impact of cytoplasmic lineage effects (Lc) for growth traits on genetic evaluation, including the genetic covariance between direct and maternal effects (s am ). Pedigree data from 496,190 Nellore animals and observations on birth weight (BW, N = 243,391), weaning weight (WW, N = 431,681), and post-weaning weight gain adjusted to 345 days (PWG, N = 172,131) were analyzed. Four univariate models were used to obtain estimates of (co)variance components using the restricted maximum likelihood method in the BLUPF90 program. Model 1 included Lc and s am . Model 2 included Lc and s am was set to zero. Model 3 did not include Lc. Model 4 did not include Lc and s am was set to zero. These models considered the effects of the Lc as random. Phenotypic variance obtained through cytoplasmic lineage effects was determined for all traits, ranging from 0.07 to 0.15, 0.15 to 0.03, and 0.05 to 0.03% for BW, WW, and PWG, respectively, for models 1 and 2. Correlations between direct and maternal genetic components were positive for WW and negative for BW and PWG. No differences were observed for genetic parameter estimates or animal ranking with the inclusion of s am . For BW, the likelihood ratio suggested that model 1 best fits the data, while model 4 was the most appropriate for WW and PWG. Thus, these models are recommended for genetic evaluations. Despite the low magnitude of cytoplasmic lineages, this effect could predict breeding value and improve the selection of animals for BW in this Nellore population.

Data collected on body weight from birth to 5 years of age in the Grootfontein Merino stud from 1968 to 2012 were analysed with univariate, multivariate and repeatability animal models. The estimated breeding values (EBVs) were compared to determine the most suitable statistical models for the estimation of EBVs. Measures of body weights included birth weight (BW), body weight at 42 days of age (W42), weaning weight (WW), body weight at 6 months (W6), 8 months (W8), 12 months (W12) and 15 months (W15) of age as well as adult weights recorded on the ewe flock from 2 to 5 years of age (AW2 to AW5). Univariate direct heritabilities were 0.20, 0.42, 0.16, 0.54, 0.43, 0.37, 0.51, 0.43, 0.40, 0.31 and 0.33 respectively. Multivariate direct heritabilities for WW, W12, W15 and AW3 were lower than those estimated with univariate models, namely 0.17, 0.22, 0.23 and 0.29 respectively. Direct heritability obtained with the repeatability model was 0.26. Maternal heritabilities for BW, W42, WW, W6, W8, and W15 were 0.11, 0.15, 0.04, 0.28, 0.18 and 0.08 respectively. Lower multivariate maternal heritabilities were obtained for WW (0.02) and W15 (0.01). The genetic correlation between direct and maternal effects was negative for all weights where it was included, ranging from-0.28 for BW to-0.95 for W6. High genetic correlations were estimated between weights at different ages with multivariate analyses. When animals were selected on EBVs estimated with multivariate models, 92% of the animals selected retained the same ranking. When using the Top 1% lists, 95% and 94% of the animals selected on either univariate (U) or multivariate (M) EBVs for W15 and WW respectively, would be identical. Selection based on univariate W15 EBVs, would possibly result in selection of different animals, due to lower rank correlations of W15U with WWU (0.67) and WWM (0.80) respectively. The moderate to high estimates of heritability for body weight demonstrated that there is still considerable additive genetic variation in body weight available. The present study indicated that the multivariate model was the most appropriate model for estimating breeding values for body weight at selection age in the Grootfontein Merino stud.

O objetivo com esta pesquisa foi estimar parâmetros genéticos e predizer tendências genéticas e fenotípicas para pesos aos 205 (P205), 365 (P365) e 550 (P550) dias de idade, em animais da raça Nelore nascidos no período de 1975 a 2011 no Estado da Bahia. Os dados foram analisados através de modelos bayesianos uni e bicaracterísticos com o programa GIBBS3F90. Os modelos utilizados para as três características incluíram os efeitos aleatórios genéticos (direto e materno), de ambiente permanente maternal, a covariável idade da vaca ao parto (efeito linear e quadrático), além do efeito fixo de grupo de contemporâneos. As herdabilidades (direta) para P205, P365 e P550 apresentaram valores inferiores aos relatados na literatura, contudo, existe possibilidade de ganho genético por meio da seleção. As predições de tendências genéticas e fenotípicas para as características foram obtidas pela regressão linear ponderada da média da variável dependente (valores genéticos e pesos observados) sobre o ano de nascimento. As tendências para P365 e P550 preditas demonstram que houve algum progresso genético para estas duas características, porém, inferiores ao peso aos 205 de idade. Os valores observados indicam pequeno, porém, favorável progresso genético para o efeito direto nas três pesagens. O progresso fenotípico foi alto nas três características, mostrando melhoria ambiental, no estado da Bahia, no decorrer do período estudado.
