This paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted to evaluate the effect of curing conditions on the properties of normal and high strength concrete (NSC and HSC) with and without pre-wetted lightweight aggregates (LWAs). Cylinder specimens were drilled out from square concrete slabs subjected to four curing regimes (i.e. standard, water, natural and sealed curing) respectively, and then tested to obtain the compressive strength after 60 days. Three discs cut along the height direction of cylinder specimens (top, middle and bottom) were used to orderly measure the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), open porosity, water absorption and splitting tensile strength. Afterwards, the comprehensive evaluation index, i.e. relative curing efficiency (RCE), was proposed based on the testing results above to quantitatively assess the effect of curing conditions on the physical properties of concrete. The experimental results indicated that curing conditions significantly influence the strengths and durability-related properties of NSC and HSC. The linear correlation can be obtained between sorptivity and open porosity of concrete under various curing conditions. Furthermore, in terms of the RCE analysis, the durability-related properties are more sensitive to the curing conditions than strengths for NSC and HSC.

Abstract:The correct estimation of building energy consumptions is assuming an always increasing importance, and a detailed reproduction of building structures, with all the single components involved, is necessary to achieve this aim. In addition, the current ecological development tries to limit the use of natural raw materials as building components, in favor of alternative (waste) materials, which ensure significant advantages from the economic, energetic and environmental point of views. In this work, dynamic heat and vapor transport in a typical three-dimensional (3D) building structure, involving different types of environmental-friendly concrete mixtures, have been simulated by using finite elements. In particular, the authors propose to substitute part of the aggregates with plastic waste and to use a fly ash based geopolymeric binder for the production of low conductivity concrete, to be employed in eco-efficient buildings. Concrete produced with natural limestone aggregates has been considered as the reference benchmark. The whole characterization of the different types of concrete tested in the present work has been obtained through laboratory experiments. The structure taken into account in the simulations is a 3D thermal bridge, typical of building envelopes. The thermal and hygrometric transient behavior of this structure, employing plastic waste in different percentages and geopolymer concrete, has been analyzed by the authors.

Mechanical performance of concrete with incorporation of coarse waste from the marble industry

The waste resulting from marble extraction process is usually disposed of in landfills or dumps and its accumulation is causing serious environmental and landscaping problems. One way of reusing marble waste is to consider its incorporation in structural concrete as a non-primary aggregate. This research work attempts to alleviate the situation and provide information on the mechanical performance of concrete as a function of the replacement ratio of primary aggregates (PA) with coarse waste marble aggregates (CMA). Three concrete families, including reference concrete (RC) mixes, were studied that were made with primary aggregates of basalt (BCA), limestone (LCA) and granite (GCA) (these are the main sources of primary aggregates in the southern and central parts of Portugal), and concrete mixes with replacement ratios of 20%, 50% and 100% of PA by CMA. To evaluate their quality and mechanical performance mixes were tested for: slump (in the Abrams cone test), specific density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, Young's modulus of elasticity and resistance to abrasion. The results suggest a tendency for the values of all mechanical properties to decline. However, this tendency is clearly weaker than those observed for the majority of the research involving other types of non-primary recycled aggregates, which are already used in certain proportions in structural concrete, according to the limits imposed by the standards and specifications. The mechanical properties of concrete made with CMA were assessed within the scope of concurrent work also undertaken at Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal), concerning the durability-related materials of the same type of concrete.
