Influence of Corneal Curvature on Central and Paracentral Pachymetry With Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: Slit lamp-adapted OCT allowed noncontact central and paracentral CT measurements. Although there were significant differences between OCT and US measurements, the corneal curvature had only a minimal influence on paracentral pachymetry with OCT using a linear scanning geometry. For more peripheral measurements or in marked alterations of the corneal curvature, correction factors may be needed.

“…However, it became significant in the paracentral areas measured in 4 points (r = 0.131, p = 0.021). 26 Age in our study was significantly correlated with CCT and non-significantly correlated with average K, in agreement with AlMahmoud et al regarding the myopic group in their study. 14 To conclude, among the myopic adult Egyptian population, the greater the myopic error measured, the steeper the cornea, with a weak positive correlation between refractive error and corneal power.…”

“…In human ophthalmology, there is a large body of literature that compares different techniques to measure the corneal thickness. The SD‐OCT provided lower values when compared with ultrasound pachymetry and the Scheimpflug camera . Another group of studies has shown the lack of difference of the OCT when compared to the Scheimpflug camera ultrasound pachymetry and optical low‐coherence reflectometry .…”

“…However, statistical analysis of these data was not the aim of this study and has not been performed. The influence of the corneal curvature on the pachymetry value is known in humans, but has not been measured in this study. As is the case with humans, the central trajectory of IR illumination was accompanied by a central reflection that could disturb tissue analysis.…”
