Influence of calcium hydroxide on dyes for dentin labeling, anlyzed by means of a new methodology

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of calcium hydroxide in intracanal dressing on the ability of the dyes rhodamine B and methylene blue to label the dentine. Forty extracted human mandibular premolars had their canals instrumented and were divided into four groups: in two groups, the canals were filled with a calcium hydroxide paste and the others remained in distilled water. After 15 days, in two groups (with and without dressing), the canals were obturated with sealer containing methy… Show more

“…In relation to MTA, in the presence of water, calcium oxide in the material could form calcium hydroxide, which would certainly cause discoloration of methylene blue. In this study, a 0.2% Rhodamine B solution was used because according to Moraes, et al 23 (2005) and Tanomaru Filho, et al 27 (2005) , Rhodamine B is not influenced by alkaline materials.…”

“…The quality of apical sealing obtained by rootend filling materials has been assessed using different methodologies such as dye penetration 5,16,18,23,28,29,33 , bacterial penetration 3,14 , endotoxin 26 , human saliva penetration 2 and fluid filtration technique 17,21 . Studies on dye penetration were considered an easy method to evaluate root-end filling materials 4,33 .…”

“…Thus, discoloration of the surfaces stained by methylene blue may occur. Therefore, Rhodamine B dye solution is more appropriate for evaluating the sealing ability of MTA 22 , 24 .…”

“…Moraes, et al 19 (2005) and Tanomaru Filho, et al 21 (2005) share the same opinion. Therefore, when performing the leakage test to assess the sealing ability of gray MTA- Angelus™, CPM™ and MBPc, in this study, 0.2% Rhodamine B was selected instead of methylene blue, based on the previously mentioned studies, since labeling by Rhodamine B is not influenced by alkaline materials 19 , 21 .…”
