Influence of Artificial Tears on Keratometric Measurements in Cataract Patients

Abstract: PATIENT POPULATION: A total of 123 eyes of 80 patients prior to cataract surgery were assigned to 2 groups based on normal and dry eyes. INTERVENTION: Two native baseline keratometries were followed by instillation of either high-or low-viscosity eye drops. Keratometry was repeated 30 seconds, 2 minutes, and 5 minutes after instillation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Influence of eye drops of different viscosity in normal and dry eyes on short time K-readings.RESULTS: Repeatability between native baseline measurement… Show more

“…The intention behind this is to make the surface of the cornea smoother and to stabilize the tear film. However, Röggla et al [30] demonstrated that instilling artificial tears prior to keratometry measurements significantly affected the astigmatism power, particularly in dry eyes. They suggested that keratometric measurements should be performed more than 5 min after HOA higher-order aberration, TBUT tear breakup time artificial tear administration and insisted that the higher the viscosity of the eye drops, the greater and longer their influence.…”

“…Keratometric alterations in patients with dry eye remain controversial. The influence of artificial tears on keratometric measurements in dry eye patients comprised the majority of the studies and demonstrated either similar or increased K-values compared to healthy controls [25][26][27]. Röggla et al [27] assessed the influence of artificial tears on K-readings and observed that the influence of higher viscosity eye drops is stronger and more persistent.…”

Röggla et al [27] assessed the influence of artificial tears on K-readings and observed that the influence of higher viscosity eye drops is stronger and more persistent. On the other hand, Sanal Dogan et al [25] observed excellent repeatability among all topography parameters including keratometric measurements in dry eye patients compared to healthy controls.…”
