Influence of a wiper on residual stresses in AA7050 rolling plate ingots

Abstract: a b s t r a c tAs-cast stresses in the foot of the ingot corresponding to the transient start-up phase of the direct chill casting have been determined in aluminum alloy AA7050 rectangular ingots. This high strength alloy is usually cast with a wiper that is placed below the mold and ejects the falling water from its surface thus reducing the cooling intensity. The ingot being hotter, internal stresses are relaxed. The efficiency of a wiper has been evaluated using both neutron diffraction measurements on ingo… Show more

“…It highly varies from one alloy to another and depends on both the cooling rate and the degree of grain refinement, i.e., on the grain structure such as equiaxed, columnar, globulitic, or globular. It is an important input data in numerical modeling of as-cast residual stresses in billets 11,12 and in rolling sheet ingots 13 as it dictates the temperature below which thermal strains start to occur.…”

“…In recent years, numerical simulation has become an important tool for studying the evolution of ingots in the DC casting process. This offers a reliable and efficient solution for the design of large-scale aluminum casting recipes [ 1 , 4 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Luo et al [ 11 ] employed the finite volume method to study the effect of different casting processes on the macro-segregation distribution of the 2024 aluminum alloy ingots.…”

“…In recent years, many scientists and technicians, involved in casting field, have devoted themselves to working out this problem to improve the plasticity [5]. Among all the improvements, wiper technology is the most successful and revolutionary progress [6]. Wiper is a slow cooling unit, located to a certain height at the bottom of crystallizer (See Figure 1).…”
