Influence of a low pressure EGR loop on a gasoline turbocharged direct injection engine

Abstract: This paper presents an experimental study of a low pressure EGR loop on a spark ignition (SI) Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine that will improve the understanding on the advantages and disadvantages of this strategy. Two steady engine operating conditions were investigated, 10 bar and 17 bar at 2000 rpm. At partial load conditions a combustion, performance, air management and exhaust gas emissions study was performed in order to analyses the EGR effect on the GTDI engine. The main advantage… Show more

“…The reference operating points and the influence of the EGR rate inclusion on this engine was analyzed by Bermúdez et al [9] and Luján et al [54]. The basis of the previous investigation was focused to find the maximum EGR rate allowed at iso-torque experiments.…”

“…EGR increases the overall charge mass so the volumetric efficiency and the total heat capacity is relatively raised, leading to reduced pumping losses and lower temperature of the in-cylinder walls [28]. EGR has also shown beneficial effects on decreasing the severity of knock in GDI engines [22], enabling to advance the spark timing that improves the combustion phasing and therefore, increasing the engine work output and the thermal efficiency [29].…”
