Inflammatory pseudotumor of the kidney: A case report

Abstract: Inflammatory pseudotumor of the kidney is a very rare lesion. We report a patient who had a renal mass raising the suspicion of a malignant neoplasm and the pathologic examination revealed an inflammatory pseudotumor. Despite its rarity, inflammatory pseudotumor of kidney should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of a solitary renal mass.

A search of available literature reviews of pediatric IMT arising in the urinary system revealed only 13 cases including ours.…”

“…For cases in which use of steroids is contraindicated, or there is a poor response to steroids, low-dose radiation therapy and chemotherapy is the treatment of choice. 1,3 Local recurrence developed in 25% of cases, and spontaneous remissions have been described, but IPTs fall into the category myofi broblastic sarcomas according to some authors. 3,4 Occurrence of an IPT in the kidney is rare; and to our knowledge only 52 cases have been described in the literature.…”

“…The differential diagnoses of renal mass associated with pyelo-calyceal involvement included Wilms' tumour [22,23], renal cell carcinoma [35], xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis [1][2][3], malakoplakia [4][5][6], inflammatory pseudotumour of the renal pelvis [7][8][9], renal lymphoma [36], and fungal infection [10,11]. In our patient the lesion could not be identified preoperatively; hence, a needle biopsy was performed.…”
