The study aimed to investigate the ability of inflammation-immunity-nutrition score (IINS) and inflammatory burden index (IBI), individually or in combination, to predict prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients after hepatectomy. Methods: A total of 701 patients who underwent HCC resection at Guangxi Medical University Cancer Hospital were enrolled in the study. An IINS ranging from 0 to 3 was defined based on preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP), lymphocyte count, and serum albumin level, while an IBI was based on CRP and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. The prognostic value of IINS and IBI was assessed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. The concordance index and calibration curve were used for internal validation of models. Decision curve analysis, net reclassification index and integrated discrimination improvement were used to compare the predictive performance of the models with traditional staging systems. Results: IINS and IBI were able to predict poor prognosis in HCC patients after hepatectomy, and a nomogram based on the IINS predicted survival at 1, 3, and 5 years better than other models or traditional staging systems. Conclusion: IINS may be accurate predictors of survival in HCC patients after hepatectomy, with potentially greater prognostic value than conventional markers.

BackgroundLung cancer is a lethal malignant tumor that is common worldwide and is associated with a high incidence of malnutrition. Phase angle (PA) is a simple, objective, and non-invasive indicator of body composition that has increasingly attracted attention as an indicator of the nutritional status and prognosis of patients with malignant tumors. This study aimed to investigate the association between the PA and overall survival in patients with lung cancer.MethodsThis study prospectively analyzed 804 lung cancer patients in the Investigation on Nutrition Status and its Clinical Outcome of Common Cancers (INSCOC) project from 40 hospitals in China. We used a restricted cubic spline to analyze the sex-specific association between PA and mortality in men and women with lung cancer. Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the independent association between PA and mortality in men and women. Sensitivity analysis was performed. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to evaluate the survival of patients with high and low PA values.ResultsThere was an L-shaped association between PA and survival in both men and women with lung cancer (p = 0.019 and p = 0.121, respectively). Kaplan–Meier survival analysis suggested that patients with a high PA showed a better survival than patients with a low PA (p = 0.007 for men and p < 0.001 for women). Multivariate-adjusted Cox regression analysis showed that PA was an independent risk factor for mortality in men (HR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.65–0.95, p = 0.015), but not in women (HR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.67–1.04, p = 0.105).ConclusionPhase angle is an independent risk factor for the mortality of male lung cancer patients. However, its role in predicting the mortality of female lung cancer patients seems to be limited.

Purpose The incidence, progression, and prognosis of cancer could be affected by inflammation and nutrition. Female patients have different inflammatory and nutritional states depending on their age and tumor types. It is important to screen for suitable prognostic indicators in female patients with cancer of different ages and tumor types. Patients and Methods Baseline clinicopathologic and laboratory characteristics of 1502 female patients with cancer were obtained from a multicenter cohort study. Concordance indices (C-indices) were used to evaluate the prediction accuracy of following inflammation- and nutrition-based indicators: advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), modified geriatric nutritional risk index (mGNRI), albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR), controlling nutritional status score (CONUT), modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), and lymphocyte-to-C-reactive protein score (LCS). Results The most suitable indicators in different female populations with cancer had C-indices as follows: LCR (0.668; 95% CI, 0.644–0.693) for all females; AGR (0.681; 95% CI, 0.619–0.743) for young females; LCR (0.667; 95% CI, 0.628–0.706) for middle-aged females; ALI (0.597; 95% CI, 0.574–0.620) for elderly females; LCR (0.684; 95% CI, 0.621–0.747) for females with reproductive system cancer; and ALI (0.652; 95% CI, 0.624–0.680) for females with non-reproductive system cancer. Conclusion The most suitable indicators for the different female populations with cancer are summarized as follows: LCR for all females, AGR for young females, LCR for middle-aged females, ALI for elderly females, LCR for females with reproductive system cancer, and ALI for females with non-reproductive system cancer.
