Infiltration of Ambient PM2.5 through Building Envelope in Apartment Housing Units in Korea

Abstract: Air pollution due to PM 2.5 is of public concern in Korea. Ambient PM 2.5 can penetrate indoors through the building envelope, affecting the indoor PM 2.5 concentrations. Most people stay indoors for approximately 80% of every day, implying that their primary exposure to PM 2.5 could be determined by the indoor air. This study aims to investigate the infiltration of ambient PM 2.5 through the building envelop in apartment housing units in Korea. The on-site infiltration test method, by using a blower-door depr… Show more

“…However, filtration does not reduce the levels of all indoor air pollutants, and some types can actually exacerbate the problem (Yu et al, 2006). Chemicals or particles can penetrate indoors through the building envelope, affecting the indoor PM 2.5 levels in real housing units with a controlled indoor-outdoor pressure differences (Choi and Kang, 2017). Therefore, a well-defined performance metrics of air cleaner is need to developed for the indoor air quality management (Hodgson et al, 2007;Yan et al, 2008).…”

“…Ventilation could influence personal exposure in enclosed MEs under two situations: 1) limited natural ventilation inherent in the structure of certain MEs (e.g., MEs lying deep in underground with low ventilation rates) (Choi et al , 2017); and 2) modern air handling systems with good filtration reduce particle levels in enclosed MEs.…”

“…Recent apartments have similar plan with three-or four-bay (bay means the number of rooms facing outdoors in line with the living room, including the living room) and a mechanical ventilation system is mandatory. New apartments have high-sealed windows to save cooling and heating energy, which could affect the penetration coefficient [29]. To obtain coefficients P and k as well as filter efficiency of system in a new apartment house in Korea, experiments were carried out for 20 days from 4 July 2017 to 23 July 2017.…”
