“…The most common indication for surgery was heart failure followed by prediction of peripheral embolism and uncontrolled infection. In our study surgery was associated with lower in hospital mortality in patients with surgical indication in agreement with the studies of Moreira et al and Leone et al [ 17 , 21 ].…”

“…In a French study with 303 patients with left-sided endocarditis, Lung et al found a higher incidence of mitral valve compromise than of aortic (49.2 vs. 32.3%) [17]. At the opposite extreme, we find the results of the study by Ilhão Moreira et al; in a series of 233 patients followed for 8 years, they observed that aortic involvement was more frequent (55.7%) than mitral (38.2%) [21].…”

“…In that study, the frequency of indication for surgical treatment was analysed according to location. It was found that operations were performed in 64% of the cases of aortic endocarditis, while the percentage was only 31% in the cases of mitral endocarditis [21].…”

“…IE is an uncommon disease that, as stated, carries significant morbidity and mortality and has a wide range of presentations (12) . Aortic valve IE frequency ranges between 36% to 50% (13)(14)(15) and IE of the mitral valve is observed between 34% to 42% (14)(15)(16)(17) according to several studies.…”
