Infective endocarditis following transcatheter edge‐to‐edge mitral valve repair: A systematic review

Abstract: IE following transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair is a rare but life-threatening complication, usually necessitating SMVR despite the high-risk profile of the patients. These results highlight the importance of adequate preventive measures and a prompt diagnosis and treatment of this serious complication.

“…Bartonella endocarditis is among the most common causes of BCNE and occurs in people with pre‐existing valvular abnormalities. B. haenselae IE is able to promote significant destruction of the valve; therefore, valvular surgery is required in more than 90% of cases, which is higher than that required for patients with endocarditis caused by other microorganisms . We presume that a residual MI following MitraClip implantation, along with the presence of prosthetic material associated with positive serology for B. haenselae , may have had an important role in IE development in our patient.…”

“…The infections caused by Bartonella species have a broad clinical spectrum ranging from asymptomatic self‐limited infections to severe disease with high morbidity and mortality rates, and are often associated with pets (scratches from cats). We investigated from the anamnesis of the patient and she resulted in owner of a cat; this might be of importance as a possible risk factor in aged patients undergoing percutaneous MVR.…”

“…Additionally, S. aureus can also grow in foods and produce enterotoxins that cause food poisoning (Lowy ). Its relative, Staphylococcus epidermidis , a natural colonizer of human skin, is recognized as a pathogenic agent because of its frequent association with bacteraemia, catheter‐related infection, central nervous system shunt infection, endocarditis, urinary tract infections, surgical site infection and endophthalmitis (Huebner and Goldmann ; Asmarats et al ). Staphylococcus spp.…”
