Infection with human retroviruses other than HIV-1: HIV-2, HTLV-1, HTLV-2, HTLV-3 and HTLV-4

Abstract: HIV-1 is the most prevalent retrovirus, with over 30 million people infected worldwide. Nevertheless, infection caused by other human retroviruses like HIV-2, HTLV-1, HTLV-2, HTLV-3 and HTLV-4 is gaining importance. Initially confined to specific geographical areas, HIV-2, HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 are becoming a major concern in non-endemic countries due to international migration flows. Clinical manifestations of retroviruses range from asymptomatic carriers to life-threatening conditions, such as AIDS in HIV-2 infe… Show more

“…The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses currently considers this virus as a divergent PTLV-1. HTLV-1 is highly endemic in certain geographic regions ( Nicolas et al 2015 ) and has infected between 10 and 20 million people worldwide ( Gessain and Cassar 2012 ). HTLV-2 is less widespread, but has been identified in pygmy populations in Central Africa as well Amerindian tribes in North and South America, and also circulates among intravenous drug users in the USA and Europe ( Gessain et al 1995 ; Salemi et al 1999 ; Mauclere et al 2011 ; Alcantara et al 2003 ).…”

“…In Central and Western Europe, the prevalence of HTLV-1, as well as HTLV-2, has been shown to be less than 0.1% among pregnant women and 0.005% among blood donors (20, 21). The prevalence of HTLV-1 is slightly higher in countries with high immigration from HTLV-1 endemic regions (mainly Portugal, Spain, France, UK) (22). In addition, higher frequencies of HTLV-2 have been described among PWID (around 3%) in Sweden (23), (around 10%) in Spain and Italy (12–14), and among HIV+ PWID (14.6%) in Ireland (15).…”

“…A second retrovirus designated HIV-2 was first isolated from Portuguese patients in 1986, but it is most common in West African countries and to a lesser extent in locations in Western Europe and elsewhere that migration from West Africa occurred (Nyamweya, 2013& Nicolás, 2015. HIV-2 is believed to have been present in Africa as early as the 1940's.…”
