Infection Rates of Rifampin/Gentamicin-Coated Titan Coloplast Penile Implants. Comparison with Inhibizone-Impregnated AMS Penile Implants

Abstract: Introduction It is a common practice to soak Titan® Coloplast penile implants in antibiotic solution prior to implantation. Experience with Inhibizone impregnation suggests that rifampin coating significantly reduces infection rates of penile implant surgery. In this article we describe the results of coating Titan Coloplast penile implants with rifampin/gentamicin solution. Aim To compare infection rates of Titan® Coloplast … Show more

“…We attempted to include as many studies as possible to increase the power of the meta-analysis but certain population groups did not have enough human clinical studies to increase precision. As such, we are aware that V/G subgroup results from the study by Dhabuwala et al 23 are inconsistent with the perception that an infection retardant coating should show an overall lower infection rate. This may have been attributable to the target spectrum of the chosen antibiotic not covering the biofilm bacteria 8 or to the limited number of cases and/or fewer studies in this field.…”

“…Standardized antibiotic coating of the hydrophilic surface of the Titan device may help. Dhabuwala's group has suggested that rifampin and gentamicin may be the ideal choice of antibiotic solution [20].…”

“…The solution utilized to prepare Coloplast devices with hydrophilic coatings may be associated with subsequent infection rates. Dhabuwala and colleagues reported significantly lower infection rates with Titan implants using rifampin/gentamicin (0%, N = 81) compared with vancomycin/gentamicin (4.4%, N = 181) ( P = 0.05) .…”
