Infection of snails with bird schistosomes and the threat of swimmer?s itch in selected Polish lakes

Abstract: Studies of selected species of Lymnaeidae and Planorbidae showed that infection with bird schistosomes occurred in 14 of the 26 Polish lakes studied. In Planorbarius corneus larvae of Bilharziella polonica were found, and in Lymnaea stagnalis and Radix auricularia larvae of Trichobilharzia ocellata. In spite of their comparatively low prevalence, cercariae, potentially pathogenic to humans, may have caused dermatitis in patients registered in one of the regions under study. The low prevalence of infection amon… Show more

“…Several foci are well known in Europe: Italy (Golo et al 1998), Germany (Allgo¨ver and Matuschka 1993;Pilz et al 1995), Austria (Allerberger et al 1994, Cerroni et al 1995, Switzerland (Eklu-Natey et al 1985;Chamot et al 1998), the Netherlands (Leenen and de Roda Husman 2004;Sluiters 2004), Iceland (Kola´rˇova´e t al. 1999), Belarus (Beer et al 1995), Poland (Zbikowska 2003(Zbikowska , 2004, and the Czech Republic (Kola´rˇovaé t al. 1989).…”

“…Outbreaks can lead to the closing of swimming areas and consequently to major financial losses for touristic operators. Several foci of HCD are well known in Europe, for example in Germany (Selbach et al 2015), France ( Jouet et al 2008), the Netherlands (Schets et al 2008), and Poland (Zbikowska 2004). It is worth mentioning that in Belgium, to the authors' knowledge, no cases were ever recorded in scientific literature.…”

“…Cercariae then seek out their definitive host to complete their life cycle. The number of cercariae released each day can vary significantly between hundreds to tens of thousands of larval parasites and can be influenced by factors such as temperature, duration of infection, and immunogenetic determinants of snail-schistosome compatibility (Sluiters et al 1980; McCarthy 1999; Zbikowska 2004; Coady et al 2006; Gordy et al 2015; Soldánová et al 2016; Pila et al 2016). While the cercariae of some species of schistosome (those of the genus Schistosoma ) are known to infect humans, species of the genera Trichobilharzia, Gigantobilharzia, Dendritobilharzia, Anserobilharzia, and Schistosomatium cannot, but are able to penetrate human skin and lead to a condition known as swimmer’s itch (Cort 1928; Batten 1956; Kolářová et al 1999).…”
