Infection and mortality of nursing personnel in Brazil from COVID-19: A cross-sectional study

Abstract: Background Health care personnel (HCP) worldwide are at-risk for contracting the novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Among health care personnel, nurses are at a particularly high risk due to the physical proximity and duration of time spent providing direct care. Documenting accurate rates of COVID-19 infection and deaths among nurses worldwide has been problematic, and many countries such as the USA have no systematic mechanism for collecting this information. “…Most healthcare workers were on the frontline in the fight against the pandemic, suffering from stress due to difficult decisions that needed to be made, frequent contact with cases of suffering and death, the enormous pressure placed on the healthcare system, the need to provide care for many patients simultaneously, as well as the risk of becoming infected and contaminating relatives and close friends [ 17 ]. Although it is not usually possible to establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the nursing team, by providing direct care to patients affected by COVID-19, is considered more susceptible than the general population [ 12 ].…”

There were 13,261 confirmed cases and 325 deaths in the 19-week period in Brazil [ 12 ]. Therefore, the illness of these professionals has a decisive impact on the entire health care system.…”

“…Nurses were at high risk of being infected by COVID-19 because they were in close contact with patients and were exposed to them for a long time. According to the International Council of Nurses, the death due to COVID-19 among health professionals accounts for 7% of the total deaths, much higher than the general population ( 7 ). Liu et al reported that nurses had experienced tremendous stress because of the stigmatization, increased risk of infection and mortality, heavy workload, and lack of protective gear and staff, in addition to the challenges related to providing care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic ( 8 ).…”
