The public service media Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) conducted a proof-of-concept study to automatically generate reports on the results of the local elections of 28 May 2023 in Spanish communities with fewer than 1000 inhabitants. This study describes the creation, testing and application of the methodological tool used to evaluate the quality of the reports generated using artificial intelligence in order to optimize the algorithm. The application of the proposed datasheet provided a systematic analysis, and the iterative use of the tool made it possible to gradually improve the results produced by the system until a suitable threshold was reached for publication. The study also showed that, despite the ability of AI systems to automatically generate a large volume of information, both human labour and the reliability of the data that feed the system are essential to ensure journalistic quality.

Comparative Study of the Information about the COVID-19 Pandemic and COVID-19 Vaccines on the Covers of United Kingdom, France, Spain and United States’ Main Newspapers

This study compares the information coverage of the vaccine against the information of the COVID-19 pandemic in eight newspapers (two per country) from the United Kingdom, France, Spain and the United States. The newspapers analyzed are The Times and The Guardian (United Kingdom), Le Monde and Le Figaro (France), El País and El Mundo (Spain), and The New York Times and The Washington Post (United States). On a methodological level, the work uses a descriptive approach of hemerographic analysis. As a result, it is observed—in the case of coverage of the pandemic—that the presence of affected persons and health personnel in the front-page information was negligible, with a predominance of news journalistic genres (brief and newsworthy, especially), evidencing a leading role of political figures and the high degree of politicization of the crisis. In addition, the visual frames in the analyzed newspapers tended to promote humanization through emotional representation. On the other hand, the results of the news coverage of the vaccine showed a predominance of news journalistic genres, wherein supranational entities and pharmaceutical companies starred in the front pages to a greater extent. The study denotes the importance of media literacy among citizens, especially in the face of this type of informational events of global significance.

Los acontecimientos globales ocurridos en los dos últimos años han dibujado un escenario intenso desde el punto de vista informativo, institucional y político. Los medios de comunicación se han legitimado ante la infodemia causada por la Covid-19 y la Guerra de Ucrania estableciendo una agenda-setting específica en la representación de la Unión Europea. En este contexto, presentamos una investigación que tiene como principal objetivo analizar la mediatización de los discursos sobre la UE en los medios españoles. Con una metodología de análisis de contenido cualitativo se han analizado un total de 543 noticias publicadas y/o emitidas en seis medios de comunicación españoles (El País, El Confidencial, ABC, El Diario.es, TVE y Antena 3) en un periodo temporal de nueve meses. La codificación y análisis de las fuentes estudiadas dio como resultado la detección de los tópicos y actores más destacados en el discurso de los medios respecto a la cuestión de la europeización.
