The research on Society 5.0 (s5.0) and Industry 5.0 (i5.0) is a relatively new and emerging domain where researchers are still striving to explore the influence within distinct contexts, worldwide. The study investigates the impact of two major models of industrialization, that is, s5.0 and i5.0 to understand the insights into how it triggers the firms' sustainable development by showing empirical examinations from the Chinese industrial sector drawing on normative stakeholder theory perspective. The results asserted that the i5.0 model positively affects sustainable performance (SSP). The empirical analysis confirmed a positive association of s5.0 model toward SSP. In addition, it found that s5.0 and i5.0 models have a positive correlation with the economic perspective of SSP. Second, the findings asserted the positive linkage between i5.0 and s5.0 from a social perspective. Finally, the study found a significant correlation between i5.0 and s5.0 on the environmental factors, respectively. This study equipped both frameworks to empirically conduct the contextual examination showing insights into the embodiment of such capabilities that may support achieving SSP. This study shows insights into certain policy implications. For instance, i5.0 and s5.0 both models support shaping innovative ecosystems, encouraging ethical and sustainable practices, encouraging effective infrastructure, empowering citizen participation, and supporting work for the betterment of society. Finally, the study enlists certain managerial and theoretical recommendations for the industries together with possibilities of future research for scholars of the world.

The supply chain is vulnerable to disruptions, which can lead to operational failure. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate and monitor the risks associated with such disruptions. Epidemics, including the profound impact of COVID‐19, exemplify disruptive risks that engender complexities throughout the value chain. COVID‐19 has caused significant disruptions to the global supply chain due to the preexisting fragile supply chains, resulting in the unavailability of essential raw materials, halts in production, and imbalances between supply and demand. It has forced the supply chain community to rethink their risk mitigation strategies. Despite its significance, there are a few studies on the existing options and strategies to mitigate the risks associated with epidemics such as COVID‐19. This special issue explores state‐of‐the‐art knowledge of various risks and their mitigation strategies, presenting optimized models and solutions. This editorial seeks to introduce valuable insights and illuminate promising avenues for future research by reviewing existing studies. The comprehensive understanding derived from this editorial and the accompanying articles of this special issue will benefit both researchers and practitioners, enabling them to navigate the multifaceted landscape of epidemic‐induced disruptive risks in the supply chain and adopt suitable mitigation strategies. Furthermore, this special issue lays a solid foundation for implementing advanced methods for managing and mitigating the disruptive risks that epidemics pose to the supply chain.

Significant attention has been given to low‐carbon smart manufacturing (SM) as a strategy for promoting sustainability and carbon‐free emissions in the manufacturing industry. The implementation of intelligent algorithms and procedures enables the attainment and enhancement of low‐carbon clever manufacturing processes. These algorithms facilitate real‐time monitoring and predictive maintenance, ensuring efficient and sustainable operations and data‐driven decision‐making, increasing resource utilisation, waste reduction, and energy efficiency. The research examines the utilisation of algorithms in the context of low‐carbon smart manufacturing, encompassing machine learning, optimisation algorithms, and predictive analytics. A comprehensive literature evaluation spanning from 2011 to 2023 is conducted to assess the significance of low‐carbon approaches in the context of smart manufacturing. An integrated approach is used using content analysis, network data analysis, bibliometric analysis, and cluster analysis. Based on the published literature the leading contributors to low‐carbon manufacturing research are India, China, United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, and Italy. The results have shown five main themes—Low‐carbon smart manufacturing and applications of Algorithms; Industry 4.0 technologies for low‐carbon manufacturing; low carbon and green manufacturing; Low‐carbon Manufacturing, and Product design and control; Lean Systems and Smart Manufacturing. The purpose of this study is to provide policymakers and researchers with a guide for the academic development of low‐carbon manufacturing by evaluating research efforts in light of identified research deficits.
