Induction of β-D-Glucosidase inStreptomyces granaticolor

Abstract: beta-D-glucosidase in Streptomyces granaticolor is an inducible enzyme. Methyl-beta-D-glucoside or cellobiose, added to a glycerol-containing medium, are most suitable inducers. The activity of beta-D-glucosidase in a culture fully induced by cellobiose is 50 times higher than the basal level of the enzyme. beta-D-glucosidase is an intracellular enzyme, whose inducibility differ with culture age and reaches its maximum in a 10-h-old mycelium. The enzyme synthesis begins 2 h after the addition of the induced an… Show more

“…(16). The optimum pH of the endocellular enzyme is close to that of the cell (pH 6) ; this property is often found in endocellular yeast 8-glucosidases (8) and endocellular fungal j3-glucosidases (17). The activity spectrum of both enzymes is limited to glucosides of the 3 bond configuration.…”

“…@Glucosides such as arbutin, pNPG and methyl-P-o-glucoside did not induce significant /3-glucosidase activity. In contrast, the latter sugar was one of the most effective inducers in S. uenezuelae [2] and S. granaticolor [4]. In strain QM-B814, the lack of induc-tion with these P_glucosides could be explained by the absence of a specific transport system for aryland alkyl-glucosides.…”
