Induced growth of BG-1 ovarian cancer cells by 17β-estradiol or various endocrine disrupting chemicals was reversed by resveratrol via downregulation of cell cycle progression

Abstract: Abstract. Resveratrol (trans-3,4' ,5-trihydroxystilbene; RES), a phytoestrogen, exists in grape skin and red wine. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) appear to promote the development and progression of estrogen-dependent cancers. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of RES on the cell proliferation induced by various EDCs in BG-1 ovarian cancer cells. Various EDCs, such as bisphenol A (BPA), nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), methoxychlor (MXC) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), were employed… Show more

“…On the contrary, low concentrations (nM or pM) of BPA and NP induce cell proliferation in transformed and non-transformed cells [64,65,66]. Here, we report that BPA and NP, at concentrations similar to those found in the urine of humans exposed to high concentrations of these EDCs, such as plastic factory workers, who are exposed up to 500 times higher levels of these compounds than the general population [67], induce apoptosis in prostate (LNCaP) and ovary (A2780) cancer-derived human cell lines.…”

“…Many studies have suggested that NP could interact with estrogen receptors (ERs) and interfere with the estrogen signaling pathway to enhance the proliferation of ERs positive cells (Kang et al, 2012). Therefore, NP may promote estrogen-related cancer progression, such as breast and ovarian cancer (In et al, 2015;Kim et al, 2015).…”

“…Previous studies reported that EDCs have a significant impact on ER expressing cancer cell proliferation such as BG-1 ovarian cancer via ER-dependent pathways (22 - 24) . Despite many previous studies showed that SPs has week estrogenicity in various assays, but it still is required to discover estrogenicity of SPs because these caused the estrogen dependent disease such as estrogen responsible cancer of reproductive system in humans or mammalians (25) .…”
