We demonstrate how one can distinguish a curved 4-dimensional spacetime from a flat one, when it is possible, relying only on the causality relations between events. It is known that it is possible only for spacetimes that are not conformally flat. We prove that if a spacetime is not conformally flat, then its non-flatness can be verified by only a few (sixteen) measurements of causal relations. Therefore the results of this paper clarify what can be said about flatness or non-flatness of the spacetime after a finite number of measurements of causal relations.

In this paper, we investigate Einstein’s gravity induced from higher-derivative scalar field theories. We develop an approach utilizing an effective theory of multiple fields for the higher-derivative theory. The expressions for induced cosmological constant and the induced gravitational constant are obtained in the present scenario of induced gravity in [Formula: see text] dimensions. We also show that finite values for the induced constants can be extracted in certain infinite-derivative theories.

We follow the work carried out by Andrei Sakharov in both research and engineering, from the first domestic thermonuclear charges to fundamental physics. We emphasize the current status of the research fields recognized to have originated in Sakharov’s work: controlled fusion, magnetic cumulation and magnetic explosion generators, induced gravity, cosmological ‘Sakharov’ (baryonic acoustic) oscillations, and baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Another subject that unexpectedly gained momentum in the 21st century is the model of a pulsating universe, which was among Sakharov’s ideas. Other subjects that were dear to him, such as quantum cosmology and the anthropic principle, are also currently at the forefront of science.
