Indoor pollutants emitted by office equipment: A review of reported data and information needs

Abstract: There is concern that potentially harmful pollutants may be emitted from office equipment. Although office equipment has been a focal point for governmental efforts to promote energy efficiency through programs such as the US EPA's Energy Star, little is known about the relationship between office equipment use and indoor air quality, and information on pollutant emissions is sparse. In this review, we summarize available information on emission rates and/or ambient concentrations of various pollutants that ar… Show more

“…Starting point for the exact laptop composition was the Ecoinvent process 'Laptop computer, at plant'. Several studies are available reporting detailed laptop compositions and the presence of FRs in laptops (Brigden et al 2007;ChemSec 2010;Deng et al 2011;Destaillats et al 2008;EFRA 2010;IVF 2007). The averages of the weight percentages of different polymers were used for our LCA scenarios, as shown in Table 3.…”

“…Emissions of hazardous pollutants from office equipment such as printers and photocopiers have become an important environmental issue related to indoor air quality (Tuomi et al, 2000;He et al, 2004;Destaillats et al, 2008;Morawska et al, 2013). Fine particulate matter (FP), which differs from gas pollutants (Shy et al, 2015;Ho et al, 2016;Lü et al, 2016), is one of the most important hazardous pollutants (Lee et al, 2001;McGarry et al, 2011;Mullins et al, 2013;Stephens et al, 2013;Hussein et al, 2015;Lin et al, 2015;Mašková et al, 2016) as it is highly associated with public health concerns as toxic aerosol due to persistent lung damage (Matson, 2005;Gehin et al, 2008).…”

“…It is a well-known the fact that in the printing process hazardous substances occur in the air, threatening human health [3]. There are few potential source from indoor pollutants from printers [4,5] whereby the main pollutants identified are from volatile organic compound [6], ozone [7] and fine particles [8]. One of important factor in indoor environment is fine particle due to the effect to health and also for how inhabitants perceive the environment [9].…”
