Abstract:The indoor air quality in day-care centres may influence the occurrence of infectious diseases and increase the risk of non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international agencies have considered particulate matter as an indicator of impact of air pollution on human health yet information on this from childcare centres is poorly documented in developing countries. This study therefore was designed to assess the particulate matter concentration (PM₁₀) in selected day-care centres (DCCs) in Ibadan, South western Nigeria. The study was descriptive cross sectional. PM 10 load was determined 3 days a week for 16 weeks spanning the late wet season and early dry season periods from 10 locations of the selected DCCs using a digital PM counter model Met one. The ratio of indoor/outdoor PM₁₀was computed. Results obtained throughout the monitoring period for all the locations were averaged and compared with WHO PM₁₀ guideline limit of 50µg/m³.Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA at 5% level of significance. Mean indoor PM₁₀ readings for wet season (73.4 ± 54.4µg/m³) and dry season (296.3 ± 61.6µg/m³)significantly exceeded guideline limit (P<0.05).The indoor/outdoor PM₁₀ ratio was 1.38 ± 0.97 and being greater than 1 indicated a possible indoor source of pollution. High particulate matter concentration observed is indicative of the poor indoor air quality condition in the day care centres. Government policies on routine air quality monitoring and stringent enforcement of environmental sanitation in day care centres are advocated.

This study aims to develop a spatial high-resolution emission inventory (2 km × 2 km) of criteria air pollutants (CO, NO x , SO 2 and PM 10 ) for National Capital Region (NCR), Delhi. The inventory is centered at the metropolitan area of Delhi, and includes adjoining parts of the neighboring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh within an area of 70 km by 70 km for the year 2010. The bottom-up gridded emission inventory has been prepared taking into account land use pattern, population density as well as industrial areas which includes major emission sources of the region, namely vehicular exhaust, road-dust re-suspension, domestic, industrial, power plants, brick kilns, aircrafts and waste sectors. Data corresponding to various sectors along with related emission factors have been acquired from literature and various regulatory bodies for the study domain. The results reveal that total estimated emissions from vehicular exhaust, road dust and power plants contribute nearly 52%, 83%, 74% and 54% of PM 10 , SO 2 , NO x and CO emission respectively. Transport sector has been found as the bulk contributor towards CO and NO x emissions. Coal-fired power plants corresponds to the most polluting sector with regard to SO 2 contributing ~67%. Power plants Badarpur, Rajghat, Indraprastha and Faridabad power plant emerged as the primary hotspots for SO 2 and PM 10 emissions. Further, Primary and secondary emission hotspots for each criteria pollutant has been identified and discussed in detail for the year 2010. In addition to it, forward trajectory analysis has been performed to assess the impact of emissions over the regional scale. Finally, a qualitative approach has been employed to assess the uncertainty in the emission estimates.
