Indonesia’s Road to Fulfill National Renewable Energy Plan Target in 2025 and 2050: Current Progress, Challenges, and Management Recommendations – A Small Review

Abstract: Indonesia has a large amount of energy consumption, domestically and industrially. Indonesia’s energy mix is still dominated by fossil fuels and coals, with the percentage of 35.64% and 50% respectively in 2020. This is caused by Indonesia’s rich supply of oil and coal, even though experts have predicted that these supplies will run out in 10 years ahead. One option to preserve Indonesia’s energy security is to start using renewable energy. Indonesia’s renewable energy potential is predicted to be around 443 G… Show more

“…The use of fossil energy mix in Indonesia is still greater than renewable energy in the production of manufacturing and services so CO2 emissions have not decreased significantly because of the use of renewable energy. [33] The percentage contribution of the renewable energy mix was only 14.71% in 2020 due to stagnant technological development and innovation due to a lack of investment in renewable energy resources.…”

“…Finally, recycling plastic packaging materials can contribute to achieving renewable energy targets set by governments (Suryawan et al, 2022;Zahra et al, 2022). Conversion of plastic waste to energy can be essential to achieve the government's renewable energy targets (Budiarto & Surjosatyo, 2021;Raharjo et al, 2022). For instance, the Indonesian government has targeted achieving a 23% renewable energy mix by 2025 and a 31% mix by 2050.…”

“…The Indonesian government continues to encourage efforts to develop renewable energy in various fields because basically, renewable energy can be applied to the fields of transportation (Irawan et al, 2021), industry (Taibi et al, 2010), households (Pojani et al, 2018, and so on. In 2025, it is targeted that the use of renewable energy in Indonesia will reach 23% and increase to 31% in 2050 (Budiarto and Surjosatyo, 2021). However, in 2020 energy sources in Indonesia are still dominated by fossils by 50% and gas and oil by 35.64% (Budiarto and Surjosatyo, 2021).…”

In response to these problems, the government is committed to continuing to encourage the use of renewable energy until it reaches the target in 2025 and 2050.…”
