Individual efficacy of intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine in primi‐ and secundigravidae in rural Burkina Faso: impact on parasitaemia, anaemia and birth weight

Abstract: Summaryobjective To assess the efficacy at individual level of intermittent preventive treatment with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) in primi-and secundigravidae in rural Burkina Faso. conclusion The risk of malaria infection was significantly reduced by IPTp with SP in primi-and secundigravidae in rural Burkina Faso. The impact on clinical outcomes is lower and mainly limited to primigravidae for LBW. Incomplete uptake of IPTp-SP and limited effect in low risk groups together may substantially dilute the… Show more

“…When given during first and second pregnancy it also causes significant reduction in the risk of having low birth weight infants (RR 0.71; 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.92), (RR 0.11; 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.17) [160,161]. A similar decrease in the incidence of low birth weight was also noted by Eisele et al (RR 0.65; 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.77) [162].…”

“…Both measures have been shown to reduce the prevalence of congenital malaria and improve pregnancy outcomes. 25,26 In addition, some of the mothers had malaria during the period of pregnancy, and the drugs administered to treat the malaria might have contributed to the low parasitemia observed in the present study.…”
