Individual Differences within the B Group Detected by Lectins*

Abstract: Summary The extract of Crotalaria mucronata seeds contains anti‐A + B agglutinins and detects, like that of a Phaseolus lunatus variant, considerable differences among B samples which by both lectins are put in the same order of sensitivity. Variation is continuous, all B samples becoming positive under suitable conditions while O samples remain negative. The sensitivity of B cells to those lectins seems to be a stable individual property. Unequal and smaller variations within the B group are disclosed by huma… Show more

“…As reported previously [12], Crotalaria mucronata contains anti-A+B, like P. lunatus 13. Anti-A of C. mucronata is practically inde pendent of temperature, whereas anti-B, highly active at 4° C but inactive at 37° C, is the most pronounced cold lectin so far described.…”

“…Hence this lectin type does not seem to be very rare. The weak anti-H present [12] in Crotalaria lanceolata is nearly in dependent of temperature. For anti-H from Ulex europaeus the same holds true; however, there is a hint that it reacts slightly more strongly at room temperature than at 4° C or 37° C, an effect already noticed [4].…”
