Individual Differences in Reproductive Strategy are Related to Views about Recreational Drug Use in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Japan

Abstract: ideological commitments, such as political orientation and religiosity. Recent studies in the U.S. suggest that moral views about recreational drug use are also influenced by attitudes towards sex and that this relationship cannot be explained by ideological commitments. In this study, we investigate student samples from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Japan. We find that, in all samples, sexual attitudes are strongly related to views about recreational drug use, even after controlling for various ideological va… Show more

“…Note, however, that this concerns moral values as a general construct because we did not find support for the five separate moral foundations this theory describes (Graham et al., 2012; Haidt, 2012). The same low reliabilities of these five foundations were found in previous research with the MFQ in the Netherlands (Quintelier, Ishii, Weeden, Kurzban, & Braeckman, 2013), suggesting that the MFQ is culturally sensitive. Nevertheless, analyses with a general scale for moral values importance show that that people who consider morality more important have a more positive attitude toward community policing as well as more other‐concerning emotions (e.g., gratitude and pride).…”

“…Similarly, those arguing so ardently against abstinence only sex education need to accept that there is at least the possibility that if they responded more strongly and negatively to sexual imagery than they currently do, they might have a different view of the evidence on the effectiveness of abstinence only education. This fits with psychological theories regarding endorsing or engaging in lifestyle choices that fit with an individual's reproductive and perhaps life history strategy (Quintelier et al 2013;Kruger & Fisher 2008;Kurzban et al 2010).…”

“…Because demographic variables also can be predictive of preferences on sex-related issues (Wilcox & Norrander, 2002), we tested the relationship between our two measures of response to sex-related materials and preferences for sex-related policies (using the index of the four sex-related items) in the context of a multivariate regression model controlling for education, income, age, gender and party identification. We also included a two-item measure of the Big 5 personality trait Openness to new experiences as this trait has been associated with attitudes toward sex/reproductive strategies (Quintelier et al 2013). …”

“…Pathogen disgust sensitivity was a significant positive predictor of Authority in five samples, but significant predictive effects for Ingroup and Purity were observed in only 3 samples (only in samples from the USA or UK).
